3. Upper Gate
Both the Upper Gate and the redesigned “Anker complex” form the entrance to the old city. Until 1840, the Upper Gate consisted of a semicircular wall and two round towers. Due to necessary street improvement works in 1911, the double-hip roofed Gate was torn down and rebuilt in a simplified way. The Gate`s left side (on the right of our picture) abuts on the majestic Vesten House, the official residence of the communal office Parkstein-Weiden. The Count Palatine Friedrich of Parkstein resided in the Vesten House from 1585 to 1593, and his two sister-in-laws, the princesses of Liegnitz, were interred at the Lutheran parish church St. Michael. |
