5. Old Schoolhouse
Weiden’s clothworkers erected the building as a barn in 1529. Only seven years later, it was completely destroyed by the fire of 1536. After reconstruction in 1565, it was decided upon that the building function as a Latin and German School. The traditional name “Old Schoolhouse” derives its meaning from these events. The building was carefully restored from 1975 to 1979. The Old School House, or, as it is called today, the “Cultural Center Hans Bauer” provides space for the town museum, the municipal archives, the Max-Reger-Chambers, the town gallery, and the Tachau Local Heritage Museum with an exhibit of remembrances of Weiden’s twin town Tachau in the Czech Republic. |
